| The Margerison-McCann Types of Work Model |
![]() The Types of Work Model illustrates the different types of work that are conducted in any team, department, unit, or task force. Companies involved in Promotion and Advertising for example, would have a lot of emphasis on the top functions of the TOW wheel. Financial Institutions and Banks may concentrate on those functions at the bottom, which provide stability and an anchor. Many Asian organizations, especially Chinese family companies or Japanese and Korean major corporations have a weighting towards the bottom Controlling sections. However, it is important to raise that successful organizations are aware that each of these functions must be carried out effectively to achieve success. Even though by the nature of your business, you will emphasize some functions more than others, make sure that all areas are done well. Look at each area and audit the work of your team or organization. Are there any functions that are being performed poorly? Have you forgotten some altogether? What is your action plan for making sure you achieve an appropriate balance for your team or organization? This model is also used on the individual level to analyze specific jobs. What are the really critical functions in your job or others? Are you trying to achieve too much rather than concentrating on those things that you really do well, and redesigning other jobs to make up for those functions that are appropriate to them. This is the crux of job analysis. In recruitment, we find that a good way to really understand a new job or one that is being advertised is to ask several people to analyze the key functions in a job. You will be surprised how much disagreement there may be between an old job holder, a supervisor of the job and other people who interface with it! The key to effective job descriptions, objectives, and recruitment is to understand the role and function of the job in your team. Most importantly, job holder, supervisor and others should agree what the functions of a job are, and how they relate to company goals. |
