Recruitment Approaches

The tiger and tiger-cub economies in Asia are experiencing growth yet again. The labor force is also very diverse with a mixture of experience, ethnicity, and a changing mix of local, regional and expatriate labor. With such diversity and growth it is inevitable that the employment infrastructure would struggle to keep up. The most disturbing result is staff turnover which is the despair of many companies. It is no less disturbing for staff who suffer dislocation and instability when they change jobs.

We believe that excellence in recruitment can go a long way to helping solve these problems. Some of the answers lie in:

  • Understanding that recruitment is only part of the total company Human Resource Management effort. The right candidate must also be supported by training, and orientation. We believe that while candidates from other countries are sometimes the only answer, development of local staff is the preferred approach for long term organisation development.
  • Language, and communication skills are integral to success and are often underestimated as criteria
  • The salary package is obviously an important criteria of attracting best candidates in Asia. But this is changing quickly as employees realise that long term career prospects and chances for personal development are even more important.
  • The culture of the organisation must also support the involvement and participation of employees. It has been demonstrated countless times, both in international and Asian organisations that the more employees are involved in decisions regarding their job the longer they will stay, the more satisfied and productive they will be.
  • The more professional your recruiters, the better chance of attracting productive and loyal staff.

Our approach is based on the following which we feel reflects the above principles:

  • Knowledge of the organisation and the job - We first meet with you to discuss the job and the person you are looking for. We use a variety of methods depending on the situation, but a full job analysis and person specification is always developed using instrumentation like the Types of Work Index, and a structured form so we do not miss anything!
  • Understanding the Linkages between recruitment and the total HRD process - Because we are also involved in management training and organisation developments, we are able to offer further services to ensure that your new staff is fully trained as well. Unlike some recruitment consultants, we are able to follow up and assist in your Human Resource Development activities as well.
  • Knowledge of the industry, labor market, salary packages and conditions in the given industry and locale Our network of advisers have many years of experience in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand in particular with emphasis on Information Technology, Manufacturing, Service, and Marketing and Advertising industries. We have full access to company, personnel, and management databases for up to date information.
  • International and local networks in both industrial and employment circles - We are a member of the IPA, a network of over 600 recruitment organisations, and have ongoing agreements with major recruitment agencies in Singapore and Thailand, plus associates in the US and Australia.
  • Looking after the interests of both candidate and organisation results in better performance - We believe both organisation and candidate must be open in providing information. This reduces the chance of expectations being unfilled on both sides. Our interviews and techniques are designed to maximise openness. However confidentiality is absolutely crucial and we protect the identities of both client and candidate until short list interview stage.
  • A database of screened and qualified candidates looking for career opportunities as well as fast Search capabilities - We have over 500 and growing screened and up to date candidates looking for opportunities. These are culled form our network of personal contacts and our resume deposit service available on the Internet. Our search methods include our network of 600 recruiters, our personal network in 6 countries, placement of advertisements in local media and trade magazines, and Internet Search
  • Techniques that focus on demonstrated past behavior and potential rather than personality - We believe that the utility of psychological tests, although sometimes they do have their pace, are limited especially in Asia. Most tests used by recruitment agencies have not been tested or validated in the region, and personality has been shown to have limited correlation with performance. We do use appropriate tests when the situation calls for it, but we are specialists in techniques such as Assessment Centres, Structured Interview and Application Blanks, In-basket tests, situational tests, case study assignments, biodata analysis and structured reference checking. In fact we even offer training courses in these methods to HR departments. We are users of the Team Management Index, which has been tested in Asia and provides an excellent summary of a candidates preferences and approach to work.
  • Consultants with demonstrated experience - Often recruitment consultants will appoint junior staff to look after your account. Our consultants have demonstrated experience in the area and are of a more senior level, engendering more confidence in applicants.
  • A local, personal and flexible approach - Because we specialists in the region, you will find we are responsive to your needs and willing to discuss your ideas as well. Because we are locally based rather than a branch of an international group we are more responsive to local needs. For liaison, we use only fully trained and competent staff
